The incessant smoking habits of some Nigerians, mostly those residing in Lagos will soon be a thing of the past, as LAGOS state house of assembly, proposes to make a law that will put an end to the indiscriminate smoking habits with a six months jail term, as a penalty for the crime.
Yesterday, the bill that will see to the public ban of smoking in LAGOS state, was passed on the LAGOS state house of assembly, after a survey they conducted and and find out that lagosians, are fully in support of the ban. This ban will be accompanied by displaying on no smoking sign post in public places and other public places as daycare centres, schools, banks, and many other public places.
The bill has passed its third reading and waiting to be fully made into law, as the Governors approval is needed to kick start the campaign that will sanitize the indiscriminate smoking habits of lagosians for good.
The bill and its penalty are as follows:
1) 10,000 fine naira for smoking in no-smoking area or a jail term not less than one month, but not more than three month.
2) 50, 000 for repeated violation of the law, after first fine, or a Neil term of six months, or both.
3) 100,000 naira for the owner or occupier of a person who owns a non-smoking areas or six-months jail term, or other punishment the deem fit for such person
4) 15 ,000 naira, for smoking in front of a child, or a month jail term.
